What Makes Garden Model Trains So Great?

When speaking about large scale model trains, many times hobbyists are referring to the Garden Model Trains. The size of a G scale model train is quite bigger than other types of model trains. As a matter of fact, the G scale is the largest of the scales used by model train hobbyists.

A garden model train, or G scale, is based on a 1:22 ratio when compared to the real size of a train. What this means is that a G scale model train is only one twenty-second of the size of a genuine, full-sized train. You can purchase various types of model trains in lower ratios. Another larger-scale train is the O scale model train, which is only 1:48 of an actual sized train. This is approximately half the size of a G scale model train. You can see this when you consider the dimensions of a G scale model train are 26.7 inches in length and 6.0 inches in height, as compared to the O scale model train with 16.1 inches in length and 3.6 inches in height for detentions. The G scale model train was first fashioned by Ernst Paul Lehmann Patentwerk. This is a German company also called Lehmann Gross Bahn (LGB), or for English speakers, “Lehmann Big Train.” This company originated in 1881; it had a US branch of the company named LGB of America.

The letter “G” is short for the German word groß, which means “big” in English and it coincides with its German heritage. Every large scale train, including the G scale model, works on a No 1 gauge track. The space between the rails of a No 1 gauge track is roughly 45 mm.

Their durability makes them the perfect model train choice, if you plan on running them in the garden or outdoors. Most G scale tracks are made out of brass. This permits the owner to enjoy the track with very little maintenance. The only maintenance required preceding each use is a single wipe with a clean cloth, and the owner can once again run the train. A few of the G scale model trains may be used indoors, it depends on how the model train is made.

The two G scale manufacturers that are at the top of the charts in the United States are Aristocraft and Bachmann.

The durability of the G scale model train is the advantage that people enjoy the most. Parents recognize that this is a type of toy that their children can have and play with for many years down the road. Plus, G scale model trains are a fantastic hobby that can be enjoyed by parents and children together. Parents will be able to have confidence that even though their children may not have the gentleness it takes to handle smaller train scales, like the N scale model train, which is just 4.8 inches long and 1.1 inches high, they will be able to control a train with the proportions of a garden model train.
