A garden model train, or G scale, is based on a 1:22 ratio when compared to the real size of a train. Another larger-scale train is the O scale model train, which is only 1:48 of an actual sized train. This is approximately half the size of a G scale model train. The letter “G” is short for the German word groß, which means “big” in English and it coincides with its German heritage. Every large scale train, including the G scale model, works on a No 1 gauge track. The space between the rails of a No 1 gauge track is roughly 45 mm.
