For those who are in love with model trains, model train shows really are a great idea. Not only will you get to show off your modeling prowess, you will also get to witness the handiwork of others firsthand. On top of that, there are all types of other events that occur at these model train conventions and shows, and they’re nothing that you want to miss!

First of all you have the many different varieties of train, from the garden model trains, all the way to the smaller models. You will also see different types of scenery and model train layout design. You would be amazed at how great people are at perspective modeling. This is a method of modeling where a person is able to make it appear as though there is more space on the model than there actually is. There are a few different ways that they can do this, and when they pull it off, it is really amazing.

Luckily, after the 1930’s the NMRA set standards by which model railroads were to be built. Before this happened, it was impossible for one model train to run on someone else’s railroad. Now that it is possible, people are able to bring their trains without disassembling their tracks.

At these shows you will find that there are tons of different types of scale model train sets on display, and you could spend an entire day just looking at half of them. You can either bring your own train set, or you can just take in the view. Either way, you are perfectly welcome at model train shows, whether you’re a veteran modeler, or just a beginner.

In addition to everything else, you will be able to attend clinics where you will be taught the proper way to go about modeling. Whether you’re wanting to run your model train through a tunnel, or learn how to control it through a computer program, you will learn everything that you could possibly need to know at these clinics. But hurry up, they fill up fast!

Some events at the model railroad shows don’t have anything to do with the railroad. You might get to enjoy coffee, cookies, and even contests. Then you’ll have the banquets that take place, as per the entry fee that you probably paid to get in. These shows are truly amazing, and if you have never been to one there hasn’t been a better time, especially considering the standards that have been put in place by the NMRA.

Look online to see if there is a model railroad show occurring near you anytime soon. You might actually be surprised at the things that are happening right in your hometown. From sharing your hobby with others, to seeing what others have accomplished, you’re sure to have a great time at a model railroad show!

Collecting model trains has been a hobby for many people as long as they can remember. Some of the great collectible model trains would those made by Bachmann. Bachmann Model Trains, often spelled incorrectly as ‘Bachman model trains’, have been around for over 150 years, so most children have more than likely played with one of their model train sets. Some of the very old models may be worth a large amount of money, if the collector decided to sell one of them.

The Bachmann Model Trains, such as its Branchline product range, now offer a double O scale model. They also offer the N gauge models. Check out our Model Train Store for Bachmann products in all scale models.

The older Bachmann Model Trains which were manufactured before the wars will cost collectors a fair size amount of money; and the post war models will cost a little less. Some vintage model trains were manufactured before World War II. These models were made of metal, and there are many collectors which collect only these metal models. Model train enthusiasts believe that the quality of the construction and the materials which was used in the manufacture of the Bachmann Model Trains is far superior to any other model train manufacturer.

The Bachmann Model Trains from the post war era include such scale model train sets as the Santa Fe MDT Plymouth 0-6-0 Diesel Locomotive number 32. The locomotive as well as the entire train set comes fully assembled and are ready to run as soon as you get the tracks together. The Santa Fe Diesel Locomotive has geared drive wheels, an operating headlight, and a very detailed die cast frame. The body itself is molded from plastic which is painted in the original Santa Fe Locomotive.

Bachmann Model Trains also produce the Burlington Route MDT Plymouth 0-6-0 Diesel Locomotive, number 9280. This Bachmann Model is fully detailed in every way as its original counterpart. So are the Union Pacific GP-50 Diesel Locomotive, number 3258; and the Santa Fe GP50 Diesel Locomotive, number 8756; this locomotive is a narrow diesel, which is painted with a red front and silver rear. The sides are complete with walking aisles, and black grab railings. The side paneling is engraved to look like real doors. The roof itself is equipped with a non functional silver horn and circulating fan vents. The headlights are fully functional as well as the metal drive wheels.

All the Bachmann Model Trains Santa Fe series are from the N series scale of 1/160. They all will interact with the tracks from other N series Bachmann Model Trains and they are all covered by a Lifetime Limited Warranty. They come packaged in protective Styrofoam, and instruction sheets. However, there are over 2000 Bachmann Model Trains to choose from.

N Scale Model Trains

There are four main sizes that hobbyists collect . Of all, the N scale model trains are the smallest. This scale is constructed to a ratio of 1:160, meaning it is 160 times reduced as compared to the original train. The proportion of the HO is approximately twice that of the N scale model train layout. Furthermore, the HO model is built to a ratio that is 1/87th the original. This scale lends itself well to hobbyists who like large models, but don’t have plenty of space to set it up. However, the N models are designed so that they are more compact, yet they display meticulous details. If you start with a small sized railroad set, the accompanying accessories will take up less space. In the long run, you will have more room to expand. Another strong case in favor of N trains is that their much smaller size will allow the surrounding scenery on your set to appear more eye-catching. One of the popular products in this category are the Kato N scale model trains.

It takes planning to set up a railroad model. You may envision a beautiful scene for your model, but you have to first assess the proportions. A variety of people create train models that are used for different purposes. With so many opportunities to explore this occupation, you can find something that suits your interest. Because people would like the flexibility of using one brand of tracks with another brand of train cars, train model makers work closely to scale and gauge specifications. As previously discussed, the scale of a train model indicates its size. It in effect means a miniature of the actual train, but to exact reduced proportions. The proportions and different letters that you see on the scale models represent the proportion of the model in reference to the actual train.

N scale model trains are relatively new in the field of model trains. N scale gets its name from the distance between its rails: 9 mm. The model trains run on tracks, the size of which represents the gauge. Gauge tells you the distance between the tracks of your model. The height of the rail is denoted by the word “code.”

There are a variety of elements that one can put together while constructing miniature railroads and the accompanying landscape. It’s your call whether you, as a model train hobbyist, want to use a size N or HO or O for your project. Rest assured, though, that the indulgence is just as great regardless of the scale or size of the train models.

HO Scale Model Train Layouts

The HO scale model train layouts are half as big the O scale model trains. HO represents “Half of O”. The HO scale is equivalent to 1/87th the size of an actual train. A track size of 16.5 millimeters is the normal gauge for HO scale model trains. The HO scale is the popular scale for most layouts. They don’t take up as much space, and the enthusiast can create imaginative scenery with well thought out track configurations in restricted areas. However, they are sufficiently large to provide for a lot of detail in the better quality models. The size of the HO scale model trains is suitable for handling by children with less risk of damage to the smaller parts. The HO scale model trains are popular for train enthusiasts, because they offer a nice middle ground between the reduced use of space needed for smaller scale trains and the detail that the larger scale trains offer.

A model train that winds through an outdoor garden may be something one train aficionado would like to have. Another devotee may have a large amount of room that will accommodate a sprawling set of railroad tracks, and someone else could have less room but would like to put in two different tracks. In order to accommodate these contrasting needs, the makers of model trains have manufactured trains in a number of different sizes.

Size O is the preferred scale among large model train enthusiasts. Size O represents a 1/48th scale, which is 1/48th as large as a standard train. One and a quarter inches is the gauge for an O scale model train. These larger scale trains are frequently put in open-air gardens. This scale, of course, doesn’t address the needs of all the train enthusiasts out there.

It was in the 1930’s that the original HO scale trains emerged in the United Kingdom. This scale was created as an option to the OO scale model trains. OO scale trains, however, were solidly ingrained among enthusiasts in the UK, and the HO trains struggled to find any commercial success. Fortunately, during the late 1950’s, American enthusiasts welcomed the concept of a realistic toy, and their interest in HO scale model trains resulted in this size really taking off, a phenomenon that continued through the rest of the millennium up to current times. HO scale model trains are favored by more than 67% of all model train hobbyists.

The HO scale trains are so sought after, that many different manufacturers offer an enormous array of sets, locomotives, rolling stock, and accessories. Model train enthusiasts can choose among the vast arrays of train sets in the HO scale with modular tracks and trains that are ready to run, along with limited-edition, finely-detailed locomotives that are constructed using brass. Model train hobbyists will go so far as to exploit the resources of global supply shops and manufacturers abroad, in addition to their local shops in order to find a specific piece to add to their HO model train layouts. If your dream is to look upon a seemingly vast panorama of mountains, rolling hills with a village or town that contains the requisite detailed features, the HO scale model trains may be just what you’re looking for. Amaze your friends as they see your train chugging along the track, snaking through the hills, and going into tunnels. The dream you’ve always had about model train railroading can come to fruition with HO scale model trains.

What Makes Garden Model Trains So Great?

When speaking about large scale model trains, many times hobbyists are referring to the Garden Model Trains. The size of a G scale model train is quite bigger than other types of model trains. As a matter of fact, the G scale is the largest of the scales used by model train hobbyists.

A garden model train, or G scale, is based on a 1:22 ratio when compared to the real size of a train. What this means is that a G scale model train is only one twenty-second of the size of a genuine, full-sized train. You can purchase various types of model trains in lower ratios. Another larger-scale train is the O scale model train, which is only 1:48 of an actual sized train. This is approximately half the size of a G scale model train. You can see this when you consider the dimensions of a G scale model train are 26.7 inches in length and 6.0 inches in height, as compared to the O scale model train with 16.1 inches in length and 3.6 inches in height for detentions. The G scale model train was first fashioned by Ernst Paul Lehmann Patentwerk. This is a German company also called Lehmann Gross Bahn (LGB), or for English speakers, “Lehmann Big Train.” This company originated in 1881; it had a US branch of the company named LGB of America.

The letter “G” is short for the German word groß, which means “big” in English and it coincides with its German heritage. Every large scale train, including the G scale model, works on a No 1 gauge track. The space between the rails of a No 1 gauge track is roughly 45 mm.

Their durability makes them the perfect model train choice, if you plan on running them in the garden or outdoors. Most G scale tracks are made out of brass. This permits the owner to enjoy the track with very little maintenance. The only maintenance required preceding each use is a single wipe with a clean cloth, and the owner can once again run the train. A few of the G scale model trains may be used indoors, it depends on how the model train is made.

The two G scale manufacturers that are at the top of the charts in the United States are Aristocraft and Bachmann.

The durability of the G scale model train is the advantage that people enjoy the most. Parents recognize that this is a type of toy that their children can have and play with for many years down the road. Plus, G scale model trains are a fantastic hobby that can be enjoyed by parents and children together. Parents will be able to have confidence that even though their children may not have the gentleness it takes to handle smaller train scales, like the N scale model train, which is just 4.8 inches long and 1.1 inches high, they will be able to control a train with the proportions of a garden model train.

Model Toy Train Sets

As can be seen by the history of Thomas the Train, model toy train sets can be a powerful addiction for many. Thomas the Train was at one point in time on every boy’s mind, and also on the minds of anyone else astonished by trains. Even though they did not realize why, small boys watched with amazement as the trains talked on the television. As they aged, boys might have realized that what enthralled them was the control man had over such a powerful machine.

Many wonder what causes a man to want to play with these “toys.” Men could be captivated by the thought of controlling these toy model trains, because even given the reduced scale, they represent very powerful machines. They could be captivated by the perplexity of how the toy model trains function; how the electricity runs through the lines to make it work. It could merely be due to how organized model trains are and that they only work on tracks. Many just remember how, as a child, the train whistled under the Christmas tree and want to relive this memory with model toy train sets. The word “toy” is no longer correct when it comes to model trains in today’s world. The old style toy model trains have developed into machines that many men are thrilled to “play” with.

When someone talks about a toy train, most people just think of the plastic ones found on sale at Christmas time. These trains are made cheaply and are priced in a way that parents will buy them for their children so that the children are introduced into the hobby. Boys are called men when they mature. Just as the toy trains played with by adults are called model train locomotives. Locomotives are designed to last a long time. The high quality of the model train locomotives beats the “push it slightly to get it to move” quality of the chintzier trains. Locomotive wheels are designed to maintain better contact with the track, so an improved connection with the electrical source can be made and it can start moving on its own. The fact that the connection is better and they move easier brings a smile to many model train owners’ faces. In addition to these facts, locomotives have improved engines. This better engine allows the locomotive to have enhanced pulling power. Quality locomotives are manufactured using metal, whereas, toy trains are ready-made from plastic. How heavy a train is affects how it functions. The more a train weighs, the better contact it can make with the track, and the better it will run.

As an alternative to electricity powered model trains, steam engines are also made available, for the small boys hiding inside grown men. You can find a model steam train on the market today and in various qualities; nothing can beat seeing a life like model train travel through life like model train layouts, which include steam!

Not many boys grow up to operate a genuine full sized locomotive. There are many locomotive operators who just look at their work as a job, not as the life long dream of a small boy. Luckily, we don’t have to drive an actual full sized train to grow up and carry out our boyhood dreams of driving a train. We can certainly satisfy our dream with a very common hobby: model trains.

One of the major appeals of model railroading is making something that reflects your inner sense of aesthetics. Model train layout design is how this is done; anyone can make a model railroad that just goes around in a circle; it’s that urge to set a scene, or tell a narrative, that makes model railroading such a compelling hobby and creative outlet. People who get into model railroading quickly get into the other aspects of the hobby, the modeling of terrain and other features.

Model train layout design can include nearly anything, from small cars and tiny buildings set by the side of your tracks to more elaborate displays that model mountains, specific villages, even down to painting and placing individual trees. A few people in the hobby refer to it as their ‘model train scenery habit’, and talk about how they can’t go to Michael’s Craft Stores or Hobby Lobby without looking at something as a potential basis for scratch building a new piece of terrain, or a new building.

And that brings us to the first question. If you’re thinking about model train layout plans, do you want to buy premade terrain, or make your own? Buying pre-made is simpler, and easier, and a lot of people who get into modeling with their train setups, start out with pre-made scenery. Pre-bought is a good way to put in your foundational scenery, particularly since the National Model Railroading Association (NMRA) makes solid guidelines on both interoperation of components (linking cars to locomotives, making sure that everyone’s locomotives work on everyone else’s track) and on dimensions and scales. This means that if you get NMRA-certified terrain in the scale you model at, everything will be pretty close.

On the other hand, there are entire sub-genres of model train layout design that don’t have commercial niches; these are settings and themes that aren’t as popular, and nobody can make enough money to pay for the sculpting needed to bring them into production. This isn’t the end of the world; it’s a doorway to creativity. It’s surprising how many common household items can be turned into H, HO or N scale scenery with an Exacto knife and a bit of time and patience; indeed, for a lot of model railroading aficionados, time spent at the workbench is the most enjoyable part of the hobby.

Most model railroaders do a mixture of pre-bought and self made model train layout; they focus on what time period or theme they enjoy doing, and slowly and gradually collect (or make) the pieces of terrain that they enjoy. It also becomes a way to bond with other model railroaders, and to bond with their children, who often get their first taste of the hobby by helping Mom or Dad glue something together, and then slowly put together the diorama and run the trains on the rails, to get everything going, and to see something that grew from their own hands and their own minds, made real.

One of the enjoyable aspects of model trains is getting to put up the landscape, the model train scenery. If you have grown tired of setting up your model railroad trains during the holidays just to take them apart and put them away afterward, you may want to consider building a more permanent set up.

A benchwork provides the platform for your model trains. Train enthusiasts can purchase a benchwork that has already been constructed, or they can build themselves one. Purchasing a benchwork kit offers more than a few benefits. The kits are previously cut and drilled. They are also stronger and more durable than plywood that has been laid across a couple of sawhorses. The kit also makes it possible for you to take it apart for moving your set to another part of the house or to train shows.

Building a model train benchwork for yourself is more time consuming and challenging, of course, but it gives you the chance to build the setting you’ve always envisioned for your trains. Developing a plan for your benchmark is the first step of the process. You must determine the size you want your layout to be. Are you going to want to expand on to it at some point in the future? What do you have in the way of space for a model train layout in your home? Do you have a particular configuration in mind for your benchwork? You can make it circular, square, oval, or rectangular. Twenty-eight inches is the usual length for the table legs, but this can be modified to whatever your design calls for. The most significant requirement of the benchwork you build is that it is sturdy and can hold the load you want to put on it. Three-eighths to a half-inch is an ample thickness for the plywood that will become your platform. For a more portable benchwork, the plywood can be cut into smaller pieces before your benchwork is assembled.

Maintain a certain mental perspective during the construction of your model train scenery. Ideally, you want your layout to seem bigger than it actually is, and represent realistic model railroad scenery at that. Multiple levels of scenery may help you to achieve this appearance, which can be enhanced by the placement of bigger trees in the front of your platform and dotting the mountain tops in the “distance” with tiny trees. Decide on a theme for your layout and choose your scenery so that it is consistent with that theme. For example, if your railroad line includes a logging train, you will want it to run through rugged looking mountains that are covered with trees. A lumberyard or a sawmill could be situated nearby.

You can get creative with your scenery for model railroads and include tunnels, rocky formations, fields, grassy meadows, bridges, and roads. You can create villages or towns with an assortment of buildings and houses. Attention to fine detail should be observed to increase the impact of your illusion. Underbrush, fences, flowers, bushes, telephone poles, signs, animals, and people provide your setting with attractive detail. Including streams, ponds, rivers, or waterfalls can give your layout a nice touch.
